Hourglass’ OATH aims to reduce abuse towards older people

PEGS Admin • August 8, 2024

Today we wanted to highlight a fantastic campaign being led by the charity Hourglass.

The organisation – which aims to end abuse towards older people – recently launched OATH.

The Older Age Tomorrow’s Hope (OATH) campaign is their bid to make society safer by eradicating this type of abuse before 2050.

Currently more than 2.5million older people experience abuse, harm, neglect or exploitation every year. The charity wants to highlight that the voices of this portion of society are rarely heard, despite them being victims of the same forms of abuse as all other age groups.

Everyone is encouraged to join the OATH campaign. By signing, they agree to:

  • Create change by supporting calls for services and strategies which focus on creating a safer ageing society.
  • Ensure parity by supporting investment in specialist services focusing on education, prevention and recovery specifically for older people.
  • Provide the rationale by promoting research and evidence which underpins decision-making around legislation and policy development.
  • Influence and build consensus by promoting OATH and sharing key messages.
  • Become a community champion by highlighting the need for a safer ageing society and inter-generational understanding and support.

Why sign up to OATH? In Hourglass’ words: “Because we need to create a Safer Ageing Society, where we can all grow old safely, without fear of abuse. Safer ageing should no longer be a hope, it should be a promise.”

PEGS has, of course, already signed up and we’d encourage you all – as individuals and organisations – to take the OATH and join the campaign to make society safer for older people.

Speaking when we signed up, our founder Michelle John said: “PEGS is delighted to share the news that we have signed Hourglass’ OATH, voicing both our support and commitment to end the abuse and neglect of older people. PEGS is proud to be standing alongside Hourglass and raising awareness of their campaign to create a safer ageing society.”

If you’d like to find out more about Hourglass, and sign up to the OATH, then head to their website for more information.

And if you’d like to hear from Hourglass CEO Richard Robinson, he’s speaking at our CPA International Conference on October 14th alongside a host of other experts. You can get your ticket for the virtual conference at www.pegsevents.co.uk.
